Help Me – Help Me!
Debby DeStefano

“They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits end. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.”
Psalms 107:27-29
Many of you will remember when my Dad, Dr. E.L. Britton, had a stroke years ago. He is now rejoicing with his Savior whom he loved and served for 101 years. We spent a week or so in the hospital and then in rehab for weeks. To say that this was a roller coaster ride would be an understatement. Thankfully, God heard the many, many prayers of His people and Dad was given more years of life. I think about those days every now and then and rejoice that he is no longer held back by his own body and has been completely and wholly healed.
“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
Psalms 61:2
Being in rehab with Dad every day was a very interesting and eye-opening experience. We met some very nice patients, and it was so sad to see some who always sat by themselves at mealtime with no apparent family around to support them. There was one particular man across the hall from my Dad who at least a couple times a day (mostly more) would begin to holler “Help me, help me.” The first couple days I would run into the hall frantically looking for a nurse to help him. I was
a little perturbed when I saw that they were not too quick to go to his aid but as I learned, this was a constant happening for this poor man. Someone would go in to see what his need is and not too much later you would again hear his pitiful cry for help. It was heart-wrenching to hear.
“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy;
at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
Psalms 16:11
So where does this elusive joy come from? Only from the Lord! You can have all of this world and its riches, but if you don’t know the Lord as your personal Savior, you will never truly experience real joy and peace. There will always be a void that can only be filled by asking Him into your heart and life.
“In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.”
Psalms 18:6
I thought about so many people that we have counseled over the years or have heard about that have had that same desperate cry for help. They cry out to the Lord when their lives are in shambles and they have nowhere to turn or no one to help. Where do you find yourself? Could you be one of these people who have reached the bottom or on your way down? Are you looking for answers? Are you seeking someone to help you?
“The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”
Psalms 34:17
I have great news for you! Jesus is always listening and always ready to come to your rescue. But you have to call on Him. You have to listen to His voice. There are many people who want help but they want it on their own terms. We have seen it many times in counseling. They present their problem and you try to tell them from the Bible what the answer is but they “choose” to ignore it and try to work things out on their own. Can I just tell you that any time someone tries to work things out on their own without the Lord leading the way, it ends in more disaster, more despair,
and more troubles.
“I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O Lord: I will keep thy statutes. I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies.”
Psalms 119:145-146
Don’t depend on working things out yourself. Know that God is the Only One Who can solve your problems and help with your pain. First, you need to ask for forgiveness for your sin and then ask Him into your heart as your Lord and Savior. Turn your life over into the Shepherd’s Hands. Reach out to Him today. Ask Him to help you and then listen and obey His voice. Trust Him today! Cry out “Help Me – Help Me” and take your heartache to the Lord for only He has the answers and only
He can bring …
Peace, peace, wonderful peace,
Coming down from the Father above!
Sweep over my spirit forever, I pray
In fathomless billows of love!
I am resting tonight in this wonderful peace,
Resting sweetly in Jesus’ control;
For I’m kept from all danger by night and by day,
And His glory is flooding my soul!
Psalms 120:1
In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me.
