“God’s Headlights”
Debby DeStefano

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 119:105
I’m sure like most people you have been thinking about the year ahead and what it holds for you. Where your life is going and how to know God’s will and follow it. Maybe you are just wandering around in the darkness hoping that God will send you an email or a text to tell you what to do next. (I have always said that following and obeying God's will would be so much easier if He would just send me a message and tell me what that is.)
“For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness."
Psalm 18:28
We’ve all been there. You are either walking or driving at night when there is no moon or any light of any kind. It’s hard to see your hand in front of you. You feel your way as best you can. You stumble on unseen things in your way. Or you are driving and you have your headlights on, but you can still only see so far and ahead of the light is complete darkness. We live in the woods and at night if there is no moon, it is pitch dark. Complete darkness. You wouldn’t want to venture out too far.
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
John 8:12
We need to be reminded that when we're on that dark road that seems like it will never end, that God doesn't always light up the whole road, He just shows us the next steps in front of us. His light is enough for our next steps. He doesn't light the entire path ahead to our final destination. That's when God sees if we really trust Him. Do you trust Him to light your path or do you get fearful just standing there in the dark and not moving at all? We're not always going to understand His leading and understand the path that He takes us on, but we need to obey and trust that God knows best. That's when Romans 8:28 becomes real in our lives. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Don't you sometimes cringe when you read the word all? We want to know everything now and we don't want to have to go through any pain in the process that God takes us through sometimes to teach us lessons and patience and trust. When you go on a trip, don't you want to know where you're going, how long it will take, and what the end will be like? I read this quote and thought that it really nails down what faith is. “If God showed us the entire road, we might rely on the plan instead of the Planner. We might trust the outcome rather than the One who controls it. But limited visibility keeps our hearts leaning into Him.” How true. Do you realize that your faith grows in the dark not in the light?
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
Psalm 119:130
Have you ever been in a completely dark room? You can’t see anything. But then someone lights a match or a candle. Immediately your eye is drawn to the light. Do you focus more on the darkness or the light? I think every one of us would say that we focus on the light. Why don’t we do that in our spiritual lives? There are so many of us who still dwell on the darkness instead of rejoicing in the light.
“I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.”
John 12:46
We need to trust God because He is our light in the darkness. He sees what's in that darkness and He knows what temptations and dangers lurk there. Are you trying to walk around in the darkness? Are you stumbling? Are you unsure of your next steps? Is the blackness all you see around you? You don’t know which way to go? Ask God to help you and be your light in the darkness and He will guide you every step of the way. Not the whole journey, but the steps right in front of you and as we trust Him for each step, He will safely lead us to our final destination.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
