Only a Boy Named David
Debby DeStefano

“Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword,
and with a spear, and with a shield:
but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts,
the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.”
1 Samuel 17:45
There is nothing sweeter than to hear a small child singing Bible songs. When my granddaughter Madison was little, she loved to sing Bible songs with me. Madison loved to sing and in her cute little voice she would sing her favorite,
“Only a Boy Named David.” She would always say to me, “Nonni, sing
“Only a Boy Named David,” and we would sing it many, many times and of course with all of the hand gestures. I got to thinking about the story of David and Goliath and realized that I haven’t read that account in a long time. So, I went to I Samuel 17 and read it again. So many thoughts came to mind as I read it. I think many times we underestimate the power of the Lord’s name. In verse 45 David told the giant Goliath that he saw all of the equipment and artillery that Goliath had but simply stated that he came to battle in the name of the Lord.
“The Lord shall fight for you,”
Exodus 14:14
What are the “giants” in your life? How do you go into battles against them? Do you go in your own name? Do your giants seem to overwhelm you with their size and power? No matter the size of your giant, God is bigger. No matter how strong your giant is, God is stronger. God has never lost a battle so go to battle in HIS name, not your own. Face your giants in the all-powerful name of the Lord.
There are so many verses that talk about trusting the Lord to fight our battles. We get so distraught and worried trying to plot out our strategy for battle when all we need to do is rest in Him and allow Him to fight our battles for us. What burdens would be lifted and what freedom we could experience if we would only learn this lesson.
2 Chronicles 32:8
“With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us,
and to fight our battles.”
I’m reminded of Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20 when the people came to him and told him about this massive army of men headed toward him and his land. Jehoshaphat was afraid and started to wonder what was going to happen. But he realized that he needed to rely on the Lord to fight this battle and he called upon his people to begin to fast and pray asking God to intervene. As they were gathered together God spoke to one of the men and he stood up and told Jehoshaphat not to worry or be afraid because the battle wasn’t theirs but the Lord’s.
“And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.
16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you.”
2 Chronicles 20:15-17
So, the next time you are facing a giant, trust the Lord to fight your battle for you. As long as you are His child, you can claim the victory through Christ. There is victory in Jesus!
Ok, so now I have the song going through your minds, right? Go ahead and sing it!
Only a Boy Named David
Only a boy named David
Only a little sling
Only a boy named David
But he could pray and sing
Only a boy named David
Only a rippling brook
Only a boy named David
But five little stones he took.
And one little stone went in the sling
And the sling went round and round
And one little stone went in the sling
And the sling went round and round
And round and round
And round and round
And round and round and round
And one little stone went up in the air
And the giant came tumbling down.
God can tumble your giants!
