What Are You Plugged Into?

Debby DeStefano

“God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this;

that power belongeth unto God.”

Psalms 62:11

Years ago, I was trying to plug something in and realized that I was going to need to get an extension cord to make it reach. I found a couple of cords and returned to my original task. I plugged it in and then into the power outlet. Nothing. Well, I thought that maybe the extension cord was no good and pulled the end of the other one that I brought and tried that one. Still nothing. After I pulled at the spaghetti pile of cords, realization sunk in that I was plugging the cord into itself. No wonder there was no power. I untangled the cords and found the correct end and plugged it into the wall and voila – power.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,”

Ephesians 3:20

How many times do we try to plug into our own power to do things? All we do is run in circles because we are plugged into ourselves. There is no power. There is no strength. We don’t get anywhere. We are stagnant and powerless.

“Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all.”

1 Chronicles 29:1

Have you ever had a power outage in your home or place of business? It is amazing how much we rely on power and don’t really understand or realize how many things are affected by power or in this case, the lack thereof. First, you walk around your house looking for candles to light your way. If you find yourself without power for a while, you automatically go to turn the light switch on when you enter a room. Oh, that’s right, there is no power. Your routine of doing many things comes to a halt as you find out that the things you did before with ease with power are no longer feasible without power. Life is on hold until the power returns.

“And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,”

Ephesians 1:19

So it is in our spiritual lives. Too many Christians think that they are self-sufficient in their own power. They think that they can handle any situation without seeking God’s power. They can work it out. They can plug into themselves but like the power cord, plugging into themselves only takes them in circles with no power.

“But be not thou far from me, O Lord: O my strength (power), haste thee to help me.”

Psalms 22:19

Imagine if you had a computer, laptop or even cell phones these days. You paid top dollar. It has all the bells and whistles. Tons of extras, tons of memory, an unlimited amount of information. I am always amazed that you can virtually find anything on the internet. You have access to pretty much anything in the world. There’s only one problem; it has no power. The cord is missing or the battery has died. What can you do with this device? What is it worth? It sits there with the potential to do great things, but it is worthless and useless because it has no power.

As Christians, we have access to the Ultimate Power Source, God. But I’m afraid so many times we don’t plug into this source. We venture out on our own and try to live life in our own power. It won’t take you long to realize that in our own strength, we are weak. But the good news is that

“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” Isaiah 40:29

Stop trying to plug into your own strength. Plug into the Lord and be amazed at the limitless power that is yours when you plug into the One Who never has a power outage and Whose power is always available.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”

Ephesians 6:10
