“What Is Your Spiritual Blood Pressure?”
Debby DeStefano

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 15:58
Lately I have been issues with low blood pressure which makes me weak and very lightheaded. So, I have to take my blood pressure every day and send it to my doctor, and she is working on getting it levelled out. It reminds me of when my husband had his double-knee replacement surgery. He had
problems with his breathing and other issues that happened after surgery. Well, there was another aspect of his problems after surgery that became a real concern and finally levelled. His blood pressure. After surgery in post-op his blood pressure dropped to 64/40. It became an ongoing problem and they checked it often. We learned that this was a common side effect of
surgery, anesthesia, and blood loss. This problem followed him from the hospital to rehab and finally when he came home especially during or after therapy. One day during therapy it dropped to 72/52. Then yet another day it soared to 190/100. Needless to say therapy was brought to a halt on those days. His blood pressure was all over the place and not steady or healthy.
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Ephesians 4:14
It reminded me of some Christians whose spiritual blood pressure is all over the place also. Not steady. Not healthy. There are some Christians who for a time become so on fire for the Lord that they go into overdrive. They forsake everything and everyone. They go overboard as they go non-stop in their quest of “serving” the Lord. Is it really for the Lord or for show or for someone’s approval or pat on the back? Their spiritual blood pressure skyrockets because no one can keep up that pace for long. Then one day they nosedive into depression or just drop out of the race altogether. Why? Because they didn’t pace themselves for the whole race. They didn’t seek God’s face as to what HE would have them do.
Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
Philippians 1:27
Then there are other Christians who you feel like you need to take their pulse to see if they are even still alive. They don’t ever do anything for the Lord or if they do, they have to be coerced into any action. They have a hard time being faithful to services, let alone join in any work that needs to be done. They never witness and invite others to church. They are Christians in name only. Barely hanging onto to life in Christ.
Therefore, brethren,
stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
2 Thessalonians 2:15
Neither of these scenarios is what the Lord wants us to be. He wants us to be steadfast, consistent, healthy, and in it for the long haul. Faithful. Dependable. He doesn’t want us to burn out and be a flash in the pan and then gone. No, He wants us to keep our spiritual blood pressure even and steady. We will be of no use to God if we burn out or if we are not even alive in Christ enough to
do anything. What is your spiritual blood pressure? Are you consistently and steadfastly keeping on keeping on? That’s what God is looking for in Christians. Maybe you need to take your spiritual blood pressure today and be honest with God and make adjustments to level your spiritual blood pressure out.
Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so
stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.
Philippians 4:1
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”
Colossians 3:23
